Language Policy

Language underpins all learning. It promotes cultural awareness and is the foundation for empowering students to develop self-expression and an understanding of the world around them.

At Wellspring, students from diverse linguistic backgrounds come together to learn, with English being the language of tuition. We have a long-term aspiration of achieving a bilingual program in which English and Arabic have equal standing.

We promote the use of Arabic in all aspects of the school, in and out of the classroom. Colloquial Lebanese dialect is built upon and students are encouraged to develop fluency in Modern Standard Arabic, especially in the PYP and MYP. At present many students are bilingual in the sense that they can switch between English and Arabic, often within one sentence. However, they are not truly bilingual in that they cannot communicate fully in Modern Standard Arabic nor can they study subjects such as Science or Math in Arabic.

Language at Wellspring is more than a subject; it is regarded as an essential tool in making meaning in every situation. In this context all teachers are language teachers. All languages are approached within the framework of the International Baccalaureate (IB)
