Service Within the Community

Service as action in the MYP is part of the continuum from PYP through to the DP as part of the CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service).
 
Service is part of the learning process. It provides students with the opportunity to experience their learning while impacting the local or global community. This experiential learning allows students to apply the concepts, skills and knowledge explored in the classroom and to take them beyond the classroom.
 
Throughout the year, students experience different types of service including direct service, indirect service and advocacy. They will undergo all or some of the stages of service: 1) investigation; 2) preparation; 3) action; 4) reflection, and 5) demonstration.


Examples of service learning in 2013 - 2014:

Wellspring collaborated with a local NGO called the Nawaya Network to raise funds for underprivileged youth, giving them the opportunity to pursue their passions and dreams. The Nawaya Network provided a half-day workshop on fundraising skills for a cause.  Students spent a month using and developing these skills as they raised funds from their families and local neighborhoods as well as the school community.

Our grade 9 Biology class worked with Foodblessed, a local hunger-relief initiative in Lebanon. The students studied the nutritional needs of a family and used that information to take action by collecting food for hungry families in underprivileged communities.
